Margin, markup and pricing calculators

Two worksheets for the arithmetic of a single sale. Both run entirely in your browser, display their formulas and let you download or print a plain-text record of what you entered.

Which calculator answers your question?

Your question Use Key output
We sell at $100 and it costs $60. What's our margin? Margin and markup Gross margin 40%
Our supplier quotes "50% markup". What margin is that? Margin and markup Margin 33.33%
What price gives a 40% margin on a $60 cost? Price from target margin Price $100
Card fees take 3% of every sale. What price still nets 40%? Price from target margin (fee field) Price ≈ $105.26

Define your cost before you calculate

Both tools use "cost" to mean the direct cost of one unit: what you pay for the product or the materials and direct labor to make it, plus any per-unit costs you choose to include such as inbound freight or packaging. Write the definition down and keep it consistent. A margin computed on landed cost is not comparable with one computed on supplier invoice price alone.

Edge cases the tools handle

A price below cost produces a negative margin and markup, and the tools show it rather than hiding it. Margin is undefined at a zero price and markup is undefined at a zero cost. A target margin of 100% or more is impossible unless cost is zero, so the price-from-margin tool rejects it.

Need break-even volume or contribution margin instead? Those worksheets are on the sibling site ameticapital.com.
